Let’s address the elephant — or rather, the Golden Retriever — in the room. You love your dog. You also love a cold drink on a patio. For years, East Tennessee has forced you to pick a lane: leash them to a chair on some brewery’s back deck and spend the whole afternoon apologizing to strangers, or leave them home, wracked with guilt, while you sip a seltzer in blissful, quiet betrayal.

Wagbar Knox said “not anymore” and built over 2 acres of off-leash freedom — 87,120 square feet, for anyone who enjoys a good flex — around a fully stocked bar. It’s the largest setup like it in Knoxville, and it might be the most honest day-drinking concept we’ve ever covered: the dog isn’t tolerated here. The dog is the whole point.

The Origin Story: A Mother, a Daughter, and Three Very Good Dogs

Every great bar has a founding myth. Wagbar Knox’s happens to involve a mother-daughter duo named Liz and Shelby, who moved to East Tennessee, fell hard for the mountains, and decided the region’s dog owners deserved better than a fenced-in patch of grass and a lukewarm hose.

Liz brings the business brain — finance, sales, and years spent in the trenches of animal rescue leadership. Shelby brings the dog brain, having grown up elbow-deep in shelter work and currently pursuing an Animal Behavior certification, presumably so she can scientifically confirm what every dog owner already knows: your dog is a genius and everyone else’s is a menace. The whole thing was inspired by their own crew — two American Bullies named Sushi and Moose, and a Shih Tzu named Buddy, who we assume is only allowed to run the place from a supervisory throne.

It’s a rare thing: a local business built by people who clearly like dogs more than they like small talk at a dog park. Which, frankly, is the entire pitch.

The Setup: Off-Leash Freedom, Full Bar, Zero Chaos

Wagbar took over the old Creekside Knox property at 6729 Malone Creek Drive and turned it into a proper “third space” — not quite a bar, not quite a dog park, entirely its own thing. Picture a sand pit for the diggers, a wading pool for the dogs who consider themselves aquatic, and enough open ground for your Labrador to finally, finally run at full speed without a leash yanking them back to reality.

Meanwhile, on the human side: draft beer, craft brews, wine, cider, and hard seltzer, plus non-alcoholic options for anyone on driving duty or just pacing themselves like a professional. No hard liquor — this is a “relax and watch your dog make questionable friendship decisions” kind of bar, not a “let’s discuss my ex” kind of bar. Rotating local food trucks handle the eating situation, because nobody has ever regretted adding a food truck to their afternoon. There are also 14 TVs in the mix, which means UT games, college football Saturdays, and basically any excuse to turn sports-watching into an outdoor social event just got a lot more interesting.

Covered areas with fans in summer and heaters in winter mean this isn’t a fair-weather operation — it runs all year, which East Tennessee’s mood-swinging climate genuinely respects. And if you’re picking a prime time to post up, Friday is the heavyweight champ: they open at 12 PM, making it one of the strongest starts to a patio-and-pup afternoon in town.

Who Gets In (and Who Has to Behave)

Humans: 18 and up, and here’s the plot twist — you don’t even need a dog to get in, and it’s free to enter either way. Bring one anyway, though. Watching strangers’ dogs be idiots together is half the entertainment.

Dogs: six months or older, spayed or neutered, current on rabies, distemper, and bordetella. If you’d rather skip the clipboard routine, email your vaccination records to wagbarknox@icloud.com ahead of time so they can build your dog profile and have your free pass ready to go. Day passes are also available for the commitment-phobic, with zero long-term commitment attached.

Beyond the daily hang, there’s a full events calendar — live music, trivia nights, breed-specific meetups (so your Doodle can finally find its people), and seasonal celebrations that give you an excuse to day-drink in a themed context, which is honestly the best kind.

The Free Day Pass, Because We Like You

Here’s the part where we stop being cute and start being useful: Wagbar Knox is offering DayDrinkingHQ readers a free day pass — no membership, no commitment, just you, your dog (or lack thereof), and a beer in hand while somebody else’s Corgi commits mild crimes against dignity in the play yard. Just email your vaccination records along with a mention of this article to wagbarknox@icloud.com so they can send you your free pass to use whenever you’re ready to come in.

If your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a cold drink, zero small talk you didn’t sign up for, and a dog living its absolute best life ten feet away from you, Wagbar Knox was built with you specifically in mind. Round up the pup, round up the friends, and go be part of the pack.

Good Times, Great People, and… bring poop bags anyway. Trust us.
